Luis Cortez Alumni Story
Having a WAEF scholarship was such a massive relief.
Luis was raised in East Wenatchee by parents who worked full-time in the tree fruit industry. He attended the University of Washington, where he carved out a remarkable path in aerospace engineering. With a recognition on the Dean’s List, he thrived academically and took on leadership roles, including serving as the Hull Team Lead for the Human Powered Submarine Club, where he guided the design of complex aerodynamic structures. He interned at AeroTEC, contributed to graduate-level research in aerodynamics, and built rockets with a local Seattle club. What made Luis truly inspiring was his commitment to lifting others - through his volunteer work with the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, he helped build a community where students like him felt seen, supported, and empowered. Luis reminded us that no matter where you start, with passion and perseverance, you can launch yourself toward a future that’s entirely your own.
